Project Area
The village of Atsagat, some 35 miles outside of Ulan-Ude.
Work proposed
The Leader of this Buddhist Temple (the "Tarba-Lama") suggests that volunteers can assist with re-building or restoring stupas (which are special Buddhist monuments) in the territory adjacent to Atsgat, along a future stretch of the Great Baikal Trail. Please note: volunteers with previous experience as bricklayers, carpenter/joiners and/or plasterers are especially desirable.
Volunteer Accommodation
Volunteers will live in simple wooden houses with basic conveniences, near the temple. The temple (or Datsan) itself is located in a very picturesque area. At the beginning of the previous century this site hosted a Buddhist cultural and education center where &qu ot;emchi-lamas" could obtain medical training in Tibet traditional medicine. The spiritual and managerial leader of the temple was the famous Agvan Dorzhiev, who was the teacher for the Dalai-Lama XIII.

Project area
Baikalsky Reserve, work on the trail will begin 6km from the village of Tanhkoi.
Work proposed
At the present moment there is a trail providing relative access running alongside the river Osinovka to the first waterfall. In 2005 it is planned to continue the construction and development of the trail further from the first waterfall. The aim of the project is to establish a trail to the standards of the GBT as a base for an ecological tour route.
In certain areas where the trail is to narrow the trail bed will be widened to 50cm, especially in areas where there is a steep slope. Dependant upon the availability of resources, in areas of the trail by rivers or other areas susceptible to floods it is necessary to build drainage channels as well as bridges, small crossings, steps and hand rails. These steps are to ensure the safety of tourists traveling on foot. With the aim of preserving the existing unique ecosystem along the trail route it is important to build a single safe and well-constructed trail route that will lead tourists away from dangerous areas and towards areas of beauty.

There will be an excursion to the head of the river Osinovka, a banya, a visit to the central office of the Baikalsky reserve. There will also be evening entertainment around the campfire.

Dates
This project will run throughout the summer.
Project area
Angarsk town, Bolshoi Island
Work proposed
The project will take place on Bolshoi island where it is planned to carry out routine maintenance on parts of the trail built in 2004, including: lengthening the trail to 2km, completing it to international standards and clearing all of the trail around the island of fallen trees brought down during the 2004 hurricane. It is planned to mark and complete a new trail route in areas where the old trail contributes to shore-line erosion as it is too close to the cliff edge and has become unsafe with cracks and fissures appearing. It is also planned to construct a bridge over the channel, which connects the small lake to the river, and to build walkways over boggy areas of the trail as well as reinforcing the trail walls where necessary.
Volunteer accommodation
Volunteers will live with families in Angarsk travelling to the project work area daily by canoe.
Entertainment and excursions
During afternoon breaks volunteers will be able to ride in the canoes and on certain weekends there will be a one day ‘water trail’ excursion around the island in canoes. For those who wish there will be an excursion to Emelyanihku valley to meet and socialise with volunteers from a different project.
