Trail “Avachinskaya trail” in Kamchatka

The “Avachinskaya” eco-trail is the most popular and accessible year round site for Kamchatka residents looking for outdoor recreation and relaxation.

Russia – Kamchatka – Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city

1st project – July 1-14 2005 – trail building

2nd project – September 1-14 – trail building and seminar conducted by GBT of Irkutsk and Earth Corps of Seattle.

Location:

«Avachinskaya trail», 30 Ñ{Ñ}-long, starts from the “Lesnaya” ski resort.  As it leaves Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city it winds through hilly surroundings of birch forests and dwarf pine trees and ends at the foot of Avachinsky volcano.

Activities: We plan to widen the trail tread, build small bridges across streams and wetland areas, build camp sites and mark the trail.

This trail is important for:

  • development of ecotourism: during summer time – hiking and biking, during the winter – skiing
  • providing education about environmental conservation to the local people
  • creating alternative jobs for residents

Work description: building an eco-trail according to international standards for hiking, biking and skiing:

  • clean trail corridor from bushes and trees
  • build small bridges across streams and wetlands
  • create camp sites (benches, informational signs, staircases to water sources, etc.)
  • mark the trail (placing directional signs)

Accomodation: hotel located at the “Lesnaya” ski resort, 4 people per room.

Food: breakfasts and dinners – in the resort cafeteria, lunches – in the field, made on a campfire.

Interesting things to do: Visit thermal water basins in Paranunke, local hot springs, walks to the Pacific Ocean, and Blue Lakes.

Host: Petropavlovsk forest service unit, “Lesnaya” ski resort
