The “Avachinskaya” eco-trail is the most popular and accessible year round site for Kamchatka residents looking for outdoor recreation and relaxation.

2nd project – September 1-14 – trail building and seminar conducted by GBT of Irkutsk and Earth Corps of Seattle.
Location:
«Avachinskaya trail», 30 Ñ{Ñ}-long, starts from the “Lesnaya” ski resort. As it leaves Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city it winds through hilly surroundings of birch forests and dwarf pine trees and ends at the foot of Avachinsky volcano.
Activities: We plan to widen the trail tread, build small bridges across streams and wetland areas, build camp sites and mark the trail.
This trail is important for:
- development of ecotourism: during summer time – hiking and biking, during the winter – skiing
- providing education about environmental conservation to the local people
- creating alternative jobs for residents
Work description: building an eco-trail according to international standards for hiking, biking and skiing:
- clean trail corridor from bushes and trees
- build small bridges across streams and wetlands
- create camp sites (benches, informational signs, staircases to water sources, etc.)
- mark the trail (placing directional signs)
Accomodation: hotel located at the “Lesnaya” ski resort, 4 people per room.
Food: breakfasts and dinners – in the resort cafeteria, lunches – in the field, made on a campfire.
Interesting things to do: Visit thermal water basins in Paranunke, local hot springs, walks to the Pacific Ocean, and Blue Lakes.
