Course of the Project

Well, the 2003 summer field season has finally finished on the GBT. And Lord, has the ice begun to break!!! The Great Baikal Trail has ceased being virtual and exiting only on paper and in our heads. The GBT has found its direction and real embodiment.

With the help of our friends and partners we were able to complete considerable work in preparing for the summer season. They brought our dreams to life, and truthfully did more than we had originally planned. Here is a brief summary of what was done in the first field season of the GBT:

During the 2003 season work was carried out on 6 sections of the GBT. 136 volunteers took part: 87 volunteers from Russia and 49 foreign volunteers from 12 countries (USA, Great Britain, Belgium, Ireland, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Slovakia, Tunis, Denmark, and Holland). In all the volunteers worked 9522 person-hours. The result of the work was the reconstruction and construction of 70 km of trail.

1. Bolshoe Goloustnoe Village - The "Peschanaya Bay - Sennaya Bay" Trail (Pribaikalski National Park).

2. Khamar-Dabansky section - The "Osinovka" Trail (State Nature Biosphere Reserve "Baikalsky"

3. The "Ushkanyi Islands" Ecological Trail (Zabaikalski National Park).

4. Severobaikalsk Section of the GBT.

5. Chivirkuiskski Section of the GBT (Zabkaikalski National Park)

6. Bagruzinski Section of the GBT (Bagruzinsk Valley, Zabaikalski National Park)

Twelve experts in the construction of ecotrails from government and public organizations in the US took part in preparing for the summer season.

Constructing the GBT was actively supported by various government and public organizations: Zabaikalski National Park; State Nature Biosphere Reserve "Baikalski"; Pribaikalski National Park; The School of Ecological Tourism (Severobaikalsk); OO Baikal Business Incubator; Ecological Center "Podlemorye" (Ust'-Barguzin); Irkutsk Regional Public National-Cultural Organization "Center for Buryat Culture"; Goloustenski Center for Ecology, Culture and Information "Estuary," and; Public Ecological Organization "Together with Baikal."
