The ecotrail “Ushkanyi Islands” is
currently the shortest section of the Great Baikal Trail. It is
all of 320 meters in length. The trail is located on Tonki Island
of the Ushkanyi archipelago. The archipelago is made up of four
islands. The Ushkani islands are the favorite resting place of
the nerpa – the Baikal freshwater seal.
The Ushkani islands lie within the territory
of the Zabaikalski national park. Equipment for the ecotrail was
supplied by the park, financed by the Fund for National Parks.
10 inspectors of the Zabaikalski National Park took park in equipping
the trail. The trail was supplied with all the necessary ingredients:
stairs, wood planks, summer house and special shelters for observing
the nerpa. No particular problems with the trail equipment arose.
This can be explained by the fact that the trail’s route
was well chosen, and no difficult engineering was needed. The
next stage will be placing information booths on the trail, for
which we will use the recommendations of American experts in explaining
ecotrails Desna Young and Craig Young.
