Rafting the Selenga river

A relatively calm river, the Selenga provides a good trip for beginning rafters. The following Class 2-3 itinerary covers from 60 to 120 km, in three to five days. It is best taken during the months of June to September. In addition to rafting, the trip has opportunities for fishing, swimming and photography. The tour begins from Taikhal fortress. The first battle between Genghis Khan and the Merkit tribes took place 100 km from Ulan Ude, at the junction of the Tugnuy and Khilok Rivers. The Tugnuy River flows into the Khilok River and the Khilok into the Selenga River, about 15 km above Kibalino village. There are also several caves along the trip.

Day 1. Arrival in Ulan-Ude, city-tour. An excursion to the open-air Ethnographical museum and Buddhist temple - datsan. Preparation for rafting.
Day 2. Transfer to Merkit fortress, picnic, hiking, rafting 3-4 hours. Overnight at tents.
Day 3-5. Rafting, fishing, visiting several caves along the path, accomodation in tents, fish dishes. Climbing the Sleeping Lion mountain. Visiting Tologoy rocks.
Day 6.Arrival in Ulan-Ude
Any phisically healthy person can take part in this tour. No age limitation. You may come even with kids - they will be able to manage the trip. You don't have to be skillful in kayaking. The Selenga river is a calm place and there are no big waves. It will take you a couple of hours to learn kayaking.
