CircumBaikal Railroad.
|
On the shore of Lake Baikal one can find a deadlock one-track railroad line. It is a wonderful place, which is popularly called "Circle Baikal road". Its level life can be disturbed only by the train consisting of 3 carriages that passes three times a day or by a group of tourists, to which the railroad is of great interest.
Trans-Baikal railway is a kind of museum of engineering constructions and building art. It is the place where the stonework of tunnels' portals, bearing walls, arches and different picturesque rocks have run into one in a remarkable manner. A magnificent view of valleys filled with some small villages greets the eye of tourists. Some of these wooden buildings are designed in "Art Nouveau" style. It is quite unusual for the middle of nowhere.

It is also a unique complex monument, a historico-architectural and nature protected area. It is a part of the state national park near Baikal.
The railway runs along the narrow rocky southwestern coast of Lake Baikal. It stretches for 85 km from Port Baikal Station to Sludyanka Station (that is an element of the planning tract of the Siberian main line, which refers to the beginning of the 20th century - Irkutsk station - Misovaya Station).
This territory includes monuments of architecture, engineering and technical art (tunnels, galleries, bridges, viaducts and bearing walls). In fact neither of any Russian railway tract has such number of macroengineering projects as Trans-Baikal railroad does.
56 tunnels, galleries and other detached buildings, 248 bridges and viaducts, 268 bearing walls, 172 monuments of architecture survive to this day (the architectural complex was damaged most of all. A lot of constructions was took to pieces and brought out to the nature-protected area of Trans-Baikal railway).
The Trans-Baikal railway complex includes monuments of geology, mineralogy, zoology and biology.
It is important to mention that the complex is also the Mecca of tourists, who come here from all the parts of the world. The number of tourists is increasing from year to year and it makes local tourism more professional.
