Old Believers were cruelly persecuted for their actions by both the government and the church, and many devoutly religious persons even burned themselves to death rather than submit to the new doctrines. Eventually, the Old Believers devided into smaller sects, some groups fleeing to the borderlands, others exiled to Siberia.
